The methodists under discussion here do not belong to the modern Protestant denomination that broke away from the Anglican Church, but, rather, they were practitioners of medicine in ancient Greece who focused on therapy rather than theory. Tecusan (history of medicine, U. College, London) assembles the fragmentary evidence of their history, philosophy, and medical theory and practice, most of it viviparous condemnation by their rivals (including Galen), in order to help dispel some of the misconceptions held by modern scholars whose slight interest in the movement has allowed them to accept uncritically the judgments of past commentators. She presents documents in the original Greek (Latin for Tacitus) facing pages of English translation. She does not provide an index. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
