In this book the author adopts Chomsky’s conception of the generative structure of language, However, in applying this conception he postulates a greater right for the empiric instance against the monopolistic claims of the deductive approach in building up a theory of language, and he calls for an elastic stability and an evolutionary provisionality of the theory so as it may react sensitively to the material of the different national languages and incorporate the incontestable results of traditional structural analysis.
